NVCWF November 20

November 20
NVCWF presents:
Ruth Hill – Travel Writer

Faith Travel Writing

What is faith travel and who does it?

Ruth will talk with us about her interest in faith-focused travel, how she researches it, and why it is a rapidly growing travel niche. She’ll also talk about how travel writing has changed since she began her career, and why it may no longer be the second most coveted career in the world.

Ruth is a fulltime professional journalist and writer of articles about the business and pleasure of travel.
She advises her readers about such pressing matters as why they should consider a small rather than a mega ship cruise in Alaska; what happens when they sign up for a resort spa hot rocks massage; and who really is in charge when they buy a Montana dog sledding adventure. Cultural travel – with an emphasis on Christian faith travel – is a specialty. Ruth’s faith travel column, Contemporary Christian Travel, appears online at the Washington Times Communities and at christianworldtraveler.com.

Ruth also uncovers and analyzes travel and hospitality industry trends and topics for several sectors of the hospitality and tourism industry including professional meetings planners, hotel owners and managers, tour operators, independent motorcoach companies, and travel agents.  She is contributing editor for MeetingsFocus (www.meetingsfocus.com) a family of four regional magazines for meeting and event planners, and her articles have appeared in about a dozen other travel industry magazines over the past 20 years.

Before she became a dedicated globetrotter, Ruth was a speechwriter and press assistant to a U.S. Senator and a corporate business editor.  Credentials include an M.S. in Communications from American University and membership in the Society of American Travel Writers.

Making the Most of Dialogue

“Show - don’t tell” is one of the most important axioms for fiction writers. But when our characters are doing the “telling” it’s an entirely different matter. Dialog can literally make, or break, your story. By following six simple guidelines, you can use your character’s thoughts and conversations to not only create believable interactions, but drive your plot and reveal your theme.
