Making the Most of Dialogue

“Show - don’t tell” is one of the most important axioms for fiction writers. But when our characters are doing the “telling” it’s an entirely different matter. Dialog can literally make, or break, your story. By following six simple guidelines, you can use your character’s thoughts and conversations to not only create believable interactions, but drive your plot and reveal your theme.

Use Your Writing in Ministry

Noreen Bryant and Kathy Cleveland
share their stories of how they have been able to use their writing in ministry. Both ladies have taken their love for writing and used it to share faith and bless their church.
Noreen:
After 20 years of volunteering her writing and graphic design services at whatever church she was a part of, Noreen joined the staff of Manassas Assembly of God as Publications Director in 2006. Now she gets paid to do the work she’s always loved enough to do for free: creative communication focused on encouraging the saints and drawing people to the love of Jesus. Noreen has over 25 years of experience as a creative director in the corporate and higher education worlds. She has also worked in magazine publishing and journalism. She has a degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan. She and her husband, Bruce, and kids David, 19, and Madeline, 16, have lived in the Manassas area since 2006.
Kathy:
Kathy has blessed her church, Manassas Assembly of God, with her creativity over many years. She serves on the MAG Missions Committee and has worked on the MAG staff. Last year she wrote curriculum for the all church mission’s trip to Highlands Children’s Home, in Arkansas. Kathy is an empty-nester and is seeking God for her next venue.

New Year’s greetings from Northern Virginia Christian Writers Fellowship.
Hope you thoroughly enjoyed Christmas 2010. As we move into the New Year, don’t let the message of Christmas fade. Every day of the year Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us. Let’s keep the message alive.
Love on earth, Good Will Toward Men
Long ago on that first Christmas Eve
Angels sang of peace and joy.
And the tired world was filled with hope
At the birth of a Baby Boy.
Each year we revisit that scene again
To celebrate His birth.
The manger, shepherds, the kings are there
But where is the peace on earth?
Peace is another word for love…
It’s the reason that Jesus came.
But the people back then didn’t get it.
Are the people now the same?
Jesus had but one mission
His words were a message of love
Love for your neighbor and yourself
And love for ourFather above.
Did He come to bring peace to the world?
Was it just to show us how?
Can peace and love be up to us…
Could it happen…..here…and now?
This Christmas, I offer a challenge
Think “love on earth… to all men”
Then Christ and the peace of Christmas
Can be born in our hearts again!
